Major League Baseball Evaporating in Baltimore
Major League Baseball Evaporating in Baltimore
I remember it like it was yesterday. I was a five-year old playing recreational baseball for the Lutherville Timonium program with aspirations to one day being a member of the Baltimore Orioles. Cal Ripken Jr. was my hero and baseball was the most important thing in my life. My summers consisted of family waffle ball games with my family just to buy time until the following spring baseball season. I would do chores around the house to earn whatever money I could so that my dad could take me on my weekend trip to Robbie’s First Base so I could buy packs of baseball cards. If I got any Orioles player in my pack than it was a successful trip even if the card priced at $.10 in the Beckett price guide. I was ten years old and in the 5th grade when my name was called on the intercom system. I walked to the office worried about what I had done because at this time of my life the office was something you wanted no part of. When I looked into the office I saw my dad and little brother and I knew what had happened. My dad had scored his company box seats to opening day at Camden Yards and I got to see MY Baltimore Orioles led by Rick Sutcliff beat the Cleveland Indians. I can still remember playoff baseball when the Orioles were screwed by a twelve year old kid against the Yankees. I would never have guessed that the end of Orioles playoff baseball had happened.
I stand here not at the age of 26 and have suffered through over a decade of losing. The average sports fan thinks that being an Orioles fan today you should be optimistic because the team is loaded in young talent with Nolan Reimold, Chris Tillman, Jake Arietta, Matt Wieters, Adam Jones, and Nick Markakis but I cannot bring myself to optimism because the last time I checked Peter Angelos is still signing the checks in Baltimore. Despite having a lot of talent in our minor league system and even in our big league roster I have a little faith that our front office will spent the money to be successful in the hardest division in all of professional sports. To Peter this is not America’s past time, to Peter this is business. As long as that old demon is cashing checks and making money it doesn’t bother him that the Orioles are currently 18 games under .500. Even if this team was close do we really believe Peter Angelos would spend the money to compete with the Boston Red Sox or the New York Yankees? I definitely do not have faith.
In fact I have lost all faith in this franchise. Three years ago I went to 21 games, two years ago I went to 14 games, last year I went to 7 games, and this year I have been to one game; that one game will be my only game. Friday Night July 31st I took my first trip to Camden Yards of the season and I thought I missed an exit and ended up in Boston. I cannot believe how many Red Sox fans had invaded our city and taking over; heck even the street vendors were wearing Boston hats. Baltimore is no longer a baseball city and we no longer matter. The days of Eddie Murray, Brooks Robinson, Cal Ripken Jr., Frank Robinson, and Jim Palmer are long over and now the Orioles are among the worst franchises in professional sports. The playoffs are nowhere in site and those fans that think we are one or two players away you are either crazy or those two players are Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle reincarnated. This team is still the disaster or it could be in even worst shape than they were when Jay Gibbons was batting clean up for them. My question is where does it go from here? Can we already predict that no significant free agent will come to Baltimore in the off-season after Mark Teixeira used Baltimore to get the contract he sought from the Yankees? Will the Orioles sign two or three ageing players whose best days are five years ago? Or could this team end up being moved in a decade? My question is Why Not?

Miami Dolphins Draft Overview (2000-2009)
Good Teams Get Better Through the Draft
How did the Dolphins go from one of the top organizations in all of professional sports to the disaster that occurred from the 2004-2007 NFL seasons? In four season the Dolphins combined for three head coaches in Dave Wannstedt, Nick Saban, and Cam Cameron and a combined record of 20-44. Sure none of the above mentioned coaches were Don Shula’s or even Brian Billick’s but the fact of the matter is that all of them failed miserably through the draft. I want to start looking at our drafts starting in the 2000 season and just analyze how poor our draft classes were. A badly run front office, bad coaching but without question our biggest area of concern was talent. I have heard it many times that the NFL is a talent acquisition business and if you do not have talent you do not win.
The Dolphins did not have a 1st Round Selection in the 200 NFL Draft but in Round 2 with the 53rd pick the Dolphins selected Todd Wade an Offensive Tackle out of Mississippi. In my opinion Todd Wade was an above average player for us for quite some time and I value him as a solid draft pick. In Round 3 the Dolphins selected Cornerback Ben Kelly out of Colorado with the 84th pick in the draft. Kelly never panned out and he eventually found himself released from the team, not a very good selection here. Round 4 saw the Dolphins grab fullback Deon Dyer out of North Carolina and despite fans taking a liking to Dyer because he could really lay some lumber his time was short-lived in Miami and he never did catch on anywhere else. Round 5 the Dolphins snagged Arturo Freeman, a safety out of South Carolina. Freeman had some solid games but never developed into a full-time starter and as soon as Defensive Coordinator Jim Bates left Miami, so did Freeman. In round 6 the Dolphins selected Ernest Grant, a Defensive Tackle from a Division 2 School who never panned out at all. I barely remember this guy being on the field and he probably never even made the CFL to be honest. Jeff Harris, a Defensive Back out of Georgia was our 7th round Selection and once again.. Who? So to sum up the 2000 NFL Draft for the Miami Dolphins; Simply horrible. One solid player and 6 guys who couldn’t even bounce around the league is what the Dolphins got in April of 2000. If I had to put a grade on this draft I would give this an F.
The 2001 NFL Draft was an absolute disaster for the Miami Dolphins. In the first round the Dolphins drafted Jamar Fletcher with the 26th pick of the draft. We needed a Quarterback since Dan Marino had retired just two seasons prior and our starting Quarterback was Jay Fiedler. I do not hate Jay Fiedler like most but we had a chance at Drew Brees and we took Jamar Fletcher. Jamar Fletcher never became more than a Nickel corner and bounced around a few times. We struck gold in the 2nd Round with Chris Chambers. Chambers was a bit inconsistent but he put up big numbers and made highlight reel catches. In 2005 Chris Chambers did make it to the Pro-Bowl in a season which he has 1,118 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. We needed up trading him to the San Diego Chargers for a 2nd Rounder but Chris Chambers delivered for the Miami Dolphins in a big way. Travis Minor was a 3rd Round selection and I see him as a major disappointment. I remember in his rookie season he took a screen for an fifty yard plus touchdown against the Colts. I really liked him at Florida State but he never panned out to be more than a 3rd down back. He was a good special teams player but in Round3 you look for a little more. We didn’t pick again until Round 5 where we took Shawn Draper who was an converted Tight End out of Alabama. Draper never made an impact of any sorts. He was not around too long. Round 6 saw the Dolphins select a couple duds in Brandon Winey who was an Offensive Tackle out of Louisiana State, Josh Heupel who was an National Championship winning Quarterback out of Oklahoma, Otis Leverette who was an Defensive End out of Alabama-Birmingham, and Rick Crowell who was a linebacker out of Colorado State. I don’t know what our scouting department was doing during the NCAA season but we were a perfect 4 for 4 in draft duds in Round 6. I mean not one of these guys ever starter or played extensively in an NFL game. The only thing that saves this draft for me was Chris Chambers and if they had not selected him in Round 2 I would have seen this as one of the worst drafts in the history of the NFL. This draft grades as a D-.
We didn’t have a First Round Pick in the 2002 NFL draft because we traded it to the Saints for Ricky Williams. Ricky Williams was an absolute monster for him but lacked in character. We should have done our homework a bit more but Ricky was a Top 10 player in the game at this point so if he didn’t flake out this trade would have been a good move; Ricky did flake out and retired out of nowhere. This was major setback to out franchise and one that it took a long while for us to recover from. Our first pick in this draft was Seth McKinney in Round 3. McKinney was a Center out of Texas A&M who came with high regard. He never really panned out. The next pick in the draft was the Eagles selecting Brain Westbrook. In Round 5 the Dolphins took a Defensive Back out of Washington by the name of Omar Lowe. Who? He was a complete turd who never made an impact of any sort. We took Sam Simmons as a compensatory pick in the 5th Round. Simmons was a receiver out of Northwestern who never panned out as well. Our final selection was Leonard Henry a Running Back out of ECU who never made an impact of any sort at all. How can I grade this draft at anything higher than an F? I can’t.
2003 was another draft where the Dolphins didn’t have a 1st Round pick. This pick was also involved in the Ricky Williams deal. Ricky ended up costing us two 1st rounders and really burned us. So we come into Round 2 with a need at Wide Receiver and Anquan Boldin is staring us right in the face and we select.. Eddie Moore, Linebacker out of Tennessee? I remember this like it was yesterday. Who? Why? Where? Just two seasons after passing on Drew Brees in favor of Jamar Fletcher we pass on Anquan Boldin for Eddie Moore. Moore never did anything in Miami. He was a complete bust and missing out on players like Brees and Boldin eventually led to the Dolphins becoming the laughing stock of the NFL. Wade Smith, an offensive Tackle out of Memphis, was the first of our two 3rd round picks. Smith was serviceable and made a few starts. I remember him getting abused big-time by Dwight Freeney. With that said he did make the All-Rookie team and was not too bad of a pick. Taylor Whitley, a Guard out Texas A&M, was our other 3rd round pick and this guy couldn’t stay healthy. He never started, never played, just another terrible pick. I liked our 5th Round Pick Donald lee who was an athletic Tight End out of Mississippi State. We gave up on him too early and now he plays for the Packers and is a solid #2 Tight End. As a compensatory pick we selected Wide Receiver JR Tolver. Tolver came out with high marks but could never crack the Wide Receiver rotation. Round 6 saw the Dolphins draft Strong Safety Corey Jenkins, Offensive Tackle Tim Provost, and safety Yeremiah Bell. Provost and Jenkins are complete waste but Yeremiah Bell really turned out to be a good player for us. He played at a pro-bowl level in 2008 landing him a long term contract with the Dolphins. Round 7 led to another dud in Davern Williams who was a Defensive Tackle out of Troy State. Only one player out of this entire draft class ending up being a good player for the Dolphins. It’s almost not fair how bad these last three years of drafting were fr this franchise. I really like Yeremiah Bell but no 1st Rounder and Eddie Moore in gives this draft class a failing grade of an F.
Things got a little better for us in the 2004 NFL Draft, Vernon Carey was our first round selection. Carey has turned out to be a very good player for us starting at Both left and Right Offensive Tackle positions. Carey recently was signed to a lucrative long-term contract and is still playing at a Pro-Bowl level for the Dolphins. In Round 4 we took Will Poole who was a very good corner out of USC. Unfortunately Poole couldn’t stay healthy which lead to his release. I think this was a solid draft selection. Tony Bua was an undersized linebacker out of Arkansas who was not a good pick but he did light up a player on the St. Louis Rams on a Punt return. Rex Hadnot was a solid pick in Round 6 as Hadnot eventually ended up being a Starting Guard for the team. He was adequate and under performed but was a good pick at this time of the draft. Round 7 landed us a dud in Tony Pape but a solid special teams player in Derrick Pope. I’d give this Draft Class a C+.
The Dolphins selected #2 in the 2005 NFL draft and despite many feelers that Braylon Edwards would be the pick the Dolphins selected Ronnie Brown. Ronnie Brown would replace the player who burnt them in Ricky Williams and filled a major void at the Running Back position. Ronnie Brown made his first pro-bowl in 2008 and I think there are some to follow. Ronnie Brown is a tough runner, a good blocker, and a great pass catcher making him one of the NFL elite all around Running Backs. In Rounf 2 the Dolphins selected Matt Roth who now starts at Outside Linebacker for the Dolphins. The Dolphins have entered contract extension negotiations for both Brown and Roth. Channing Crowder was a 1st Round talent that fell to us in the 3rd Round.Crowder just got extended and still starts in the middle. Crowder does need to make more plays but is indeed a tackling machine. We took Travis Daniels in Round 4; Daniels starter at Corner for us for a few seasons and was one of the teams’ best defensive backs for a few years. He fell out of favor with the organization when Cam Cameron and company came into town and was traded to the Cleveland Browns this past season. Anthony Alabi was our 5th Round selection who Dolphin nation had high hopes for. He got hurt and never was the same. Kevin Vickerson was a very good pick in the 7th Round and still plays in the league. I grade this Draft Class as a B+. I think they landed three very good players here who are still on the team and making a big impact.
The 2006 NFL Draft saw the Miami Dolphins take another step back in terms of selecting talent. Jason Allen was selected with 16th selection in Round 1 and has show glimpse of being a play-maker but for whatever reason has not seen the field as a full-time starter through 3 regime’s of the Dolphins front office. In Round3 they drafted Derek Hagan who drew solid praise coming out of Arizona State. The truth is that inconsistent hands led to his demise in Miami. Hagan had flashes of becoming a solid player but those flashes extinguished quickly. Round 4 we selected Offensive Tackle Joe Toledo who never cracked the starting lineup and had handful of injuries. We had three picks in Round 7 which led to Fred Evans, Rod Wright, and Devin Aromashodu. Rod Wright was a 1st round talent that fell to injury and is still on the team. Evans is best known for getting arrested and tazed out of Miami. How could you give this grade a passing grade? You just can’t when you select a special team’s gunner in Round 1. F.
Another new regime led by Cam Cameron and Randy Muellar so things should get better? No chance. The Dolphins made a very controversial call when the selected Ted Ginn Jr. at #9 overall when Brady Quinn was staring them in the face. Quinn has failed to impress while Teddy Ginn was an important component of the Dolphins run last season. The player who I really wanted was Patrick Willis is now an all-world middle linebacker but I do see a lot of potential in Ginn. Ginn is working extremely hard to shush the critics and he improved a great deal from season one to season two. Round 2 saw us reach with the 40th pick for BYU Quarterback John Beck. Beck was horrible in his short stint in Miami. We shopped him prior to last April’s draft but couldn’t even get a 7th round pick for this guy. Samson Satele was not a bad pick but bigger Nose Tackles eat this guy up. They traded him to Oakland after they signed Jake Grove to improve their interior run game. The remainder of the draft was horrible with Paul Soiai and Brandon Fields being the only keepers. To this point Fields has lacked consistency and Soliai has made progress but seems to be lazy. Other picks such as Reagan Mauia, Kelvin Smith, and Abraham Wright were quickly exiled from Miami. The Ginn pick was the only pick that sat well with me. Another failure of a draft for the Miami Dolphins.
The 2008 NFL Draft was the first for the Parcells, Ireland, and Sparano trio. They stuck gold with their first pick in Jake Long. Everyone thought we would go defense with Chris Long or Glenn Dorsey but we filled a decade long need of a quality Left Tackle. Big Jake started from Day one and earned Pro-Bowl honors in just his rookie season. We had two second round draft selections with the first being Phillip Merling. Merling was a Top 15 talent in this draft but fell due to injury. He seems poised to start this season. In Week 17 Merling intercepted a Brett favre screen pass which he took to the house. When he was in the game you always saw #97 around the ball. The second of our Round 2 selections was Chad Henne. Henne was rated among the top Quarterbacks in this draft and Miami was very high on him. I think they were shocked that he fell into their laps here. Henne is the Quarterback of the future in Miami and has received very strong praise. Unfortunately for him Chad Pennington had something to prove. Kendall Langford in Round 3 was a steal. This guy is the prototypical 3-4 defensive end. He did hit a rookie slump half way through the season but I think we have a pair of book ends in Langford and Merling. We traded a 4th and a 6th Round Draft pick to the Cowboys in exchange for Akin Ayodele, Anthony Fasano, and Jason Ferguson; robbery. We robbed the Cowboys blind as Ayodele started 16 games in the middle, Fasanao was major target for Pennington and developed into an upper echelon Tight End, and Ferguson is a very important component to this defense. We drafted Donald Thomas in Round 6 who seems to be a lock as starting Right Guard. Lionel Dotson and Shawn Murphy are depth pplayers who have shown great improvement. Jalen Paremele was signed off our Practice Squad by the Baltimore Ravens. Overall this draft was the foundation to the Dolphins turn around for now and for the future. Acquiring 3 starters for two draft picks was pure genius. I grade this draft as an A.
It is way too early to grade the 2009 Miami Dolphin draft class but our day one was very successful. Vontae Davis and Sean Smith were two of the best Corner’s in this draft and we locked them up. Pat White is the ultimate x-factor and will give defensive coordinators nightmares. Whites ability in the “Wild-Cat” and spread offenses will give us a very dangerous unit. Andrew Gardner was a great depth pick for our Offensive Line and I believe he is good enough o start in a couple of years. Chris Clemons was value pick. John Nalbone, Brian Hartline, and Patrick turner have something to prove. I will not grade this draft class yet but will say I am very happy with the selections with the exception of the Brian Harltine pick.
Hopefully the recent trend of successful draft classes can continue to get this franchise where it belongs, at the top of the NFL.
Chris Tillman's Debut
It wasn't perfect but it was certainly uplifting. He gave up 3 Homerun's but was able to keep runners off of base, had solid control, and all indications that this guy is going to be a stud

Derrick Mason
It looks like Mason will come out of retirement alreay and play for the Ravens. Despite this the Ravens are tying out DJ Hackett and Drew Bennett this week as an insurance policy

Chris Tillman is coming...
I received word that the Baltimore Orioles will be calling up Chris Tillman in the very near future
2009: Miami Dolphins Preview
Bill Parcells came to town and really turned the sinking ship in Miami around. We were coming off a 1-15 season and didn’t have much to look forward to. We still didn’t have our Quarterback situation figured out and we needed someone to guide us. Parcells brought in in two of his guys in Jeff Ireland and Tony Sparano who over-hauled the entire coaching staff which is what this team was lacking more than talent, they needed direction. They finally addressed their two biggest needs of the last decade when they selected Jake Long to play Left Tackle and Chad Henne to be the Quarterback of the future. Not to mention they brought us Chad Pennington who is the best player this franchise has seen in a very long time and the answer to the Quarterback position which we have not answered since Danny Marino retired over a decade ago. I know last year we played a “soft” schedule but I don’t think our run to the AFC East title was a fluke, it was just good coaching with good young talent. Our 2009 roster is loaded with talent and year 2 under the new regime’s system should be even better. I think we will be in the post-season again and are just one year away from being a real contender; we might even contend this year. All the pre-season hype about the return of Tom Brady and how it is the Patriots’ division to lose will really get our team focused. Not to mention that Tony Sparano is good at using information like that and using it as motivation. Let’s take a position by position look at our roster…Also I will predict the 53 man roster with starters in BOLD.
[Quarterback]
For the first time since Dan Marino retired I feel fully confident about this position. I think our Quarterback situation is enviable to a majority of the league. Vince Carruci, a well respected NFL writer, recently blogged about how dangerous our Quarterback situation could be to the league. First, there is Chad Pennington who lead this team from the dumps to the promise land. Pennington will always catch flack for not having the strongest arm in the league but he is smart and so damn accurate. He may never put the numbers up that Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees etc. does but to me he is a top 10 Quarterback in this league which is evident by our run last season. I think too many fans, writers, and the media seem to be thinking that Chad Henne’s time might be coming but As I agree that Chad Henne is our Quarterback of the future, the future might be 3-4 years away. Pennington is simply to good for us to let go because we have Henne and Pat White IMO. Pennington has some limitations but he makes up for those with his smarts and his preparation. Let’s see what Chad can do in 2009 before we write him off because he proved last year that he is good at proving people wrong. Chad Henne has a stronger arm than Pennington and has the intangibles that will one day make him a special player. Before the draft last season I rated the Quarterback position as follows1) Chad Henne2) Matt Ryan3) Joe Flacco. Why am I so high on Chad Henne? Henne was a four year starter at Michigan which is impressive at itself. He is a gym rat with great size and physical tools. No one on this team benefits from Chad Pennington more than Henne. Henne has learned how to prepare, how to study and will be very good one day. At OTA’s he has looked mighty impressive showing that big arm and we all know how high our front office is on the guy.The wild-card is Pat White. White was the best football player in this draft. He wasn’t drafted to be the every down Quarterback just yet but trust me he will see the field 12-15 plays a game and will revolutionize the game of football. White will be used in the wild-cat and presents a major upgrade to the package with his ability to throw the ball. IMO White is a better option than Florida’s Tim Tebow. The drafting of White solidifies our Quarterback position even if Chad Pennington does depart. The combination of White/Henne is scary for opposing defenses. The Dolphins really are working with a three-headed monster at Quarterback with Pennington being the grizzly veteran who has proven to play at an MVP level, Chad Henne who is the young gun with all the potential to be a star in this league, and the ultimate X-factor in Pat White. Grade: 8.8
Who Makes the Team

[Running Back]
For my money Ronnie Brown is the best Running Back in this league not named Adrian Peterson. Some might say I am drinking the Orange Kool-Aid but let’s take a look at what he has done for this football team. Two years ago he was having a League MVP type season before tearing his ACL; last season he was a key component to our Division title as he was the most important aspect of the Wild-Cat. He should have done more inside the tackles but with both of our starting guards sidelined with injuries and Samson Satele lacking that physicality the holes just were not there. I think two years removed from that ACL injury we will see the best Ronnie Brown we have ever seen. Not to forget that he is in a contract year.Ricky Williams made some nice plays last year and I would argue that he is among the league’s best #2 backs. He started to show that burst down the stretch but he defiantly is not the player he was back in 2002-2003. He is a great complement to Ronnie Brown and an awesome option as a backup Running Back.Patrick Cobbs hade a breakout season last year. He made some nice plays out of the wild-cat and is one of the best special teams players on the team. He is a reliable third down back with solid hands. I expect him to make more big plays in the upcoming season.Lex Hilliard runs with power but I just don’t see him making this roster. I don’t see us carrying more than three Running Backs. He could see the Practice Squad again but the sudden success of Loushaka Polite and Patrick Cobbs makes his roster slot disappear.Loushaka Polite was a bright spot for us last season. Every time he got the ball in 3rd and short and 4th and short situations he converted. Not to mention that he is a hell of a lead blocker who looks for contact Grade: 8.7
Who Makes the team?

*Ricky Williams (5)
*Patrick Cobbs (6)
* Loushaka Polite (7)
[Wide Receiver/ Tight End]
Ted Ginn Jr. was the star of the off-season; he fully dedicated himself to the off-season program, to Chad Pennington, and to the game of football. We know that Ginn has blazing speed but his route runner is getting better b/c he is playing with confidence. He became a man to me with the big plays he made in Week 17 when we clinched the division against the New York Jets. In OTA’s he has been totally impressive as he just looks so much more polished than he did a season ago. I predict he gets that 1,000 yard season under his belt.Greg Camarillo is way ahead of schedule on returning from his ACL tear he suffered in Week 12 last season. Camarillo is a reliable possession option and is sure-handed. When mini-camp started off Camarillo was running at full speed with the 1st team offense.Davone Bess was an absolute gem as an undrafted free agent. The guy is the ideal slot received who I truly believe will be Wes Welker like. He is tough and fights for yards after the catch. He will only get better. When we drafted Pat Turner in the 3rd Round I was shocked but this selection just show how much more about football that Ireland, Parcells, and Sparano know than the average Joe. Turner has ideal size and catches everything. His speed is surprising when you see him get off the line and he is a very good route runner. Turner will be what we expected out of Wilford last season and I truly believe he will be a starter in this league.I think we keep 6 receivers on the roster this season so two of the following will make the team.. Brian Hartline, Anthony Armstrong, and Brandon London. I think Hartline makes it just because he was a 4th Round Pick. Not to say that he isn’t a good football player but he was without question a reach. Hartline is a hard-worker and should be a special teams’ ace. Anthony Armstrong has been special in OTA’s and London has a ton of upside. I think in a surprise move we cut London to keep Armstrong.Anthony Fasano and Akin Ayodele for a 4th Rounder? Are you kidding me? What a great move that was as Fasano was great for us last season and will be a pro-owl tight end in the next couple of years. Lock this guy up. David Martin was a pleasant surprise and made some big plays last season; hopefully we can lock him up to an extension at a nice cost. I do think we might keep 4 tight ends this year especially knowing that two are free agents at seasons end. Joey Haynos has ideal size and is an above average blocker. I know the front office is high on this guy but John Nalbone was a workout warrior who could be a small-school steal. I think they keep Nalbone over Haynos. Ernest Wilford gets the axe and he deserves it. Grade: 7.9

Who makes the team?*Jake Long (17)*Justin Smiley (18)* Jake Grove (19)*Donald Thomas (20)*Vernon Carey (21)*Andrew Gardner (22)* Shawn Murphy (23)*Brandon Frye (24)*Ikechuku Ndukwe (25)*Joe Berger (26)
Jake Long was everything expected out of a #1 pick and more. Big Jake was Hawaii bound in his rookie season and with some seasoning will be a premier Left tackle in this league. I know Joe Thomas is good but I see Joe Thomas and a little more with Jake Long. Justin Smiley was a leader on this young line last season and was playing at a Pro-Bowl level before his injury. I find it very encouraging that he is at full speed already. Vernon Carey is as good as they come as Right Tackle’s in this league and the only one who I can say is clearly better is Jordan Gross. We traded away Samson Satele in favor of Jake Grove and this was a GREAT move. Grove is a nasty anchor that you need on a line and brings the attitude that Parcells covets. Grove is much better at the point of attack than Satele and should do a much better job with players such as Vince Wilfork and Kris Jenkins. If Donald Thomas can stay healthy he is a lock at Right Guard. But two injuries in two years concern me greatly. I was devastated when we took Hartline over Duke Robinson in Round 4 of the draft. I hope Thomas is ready by training camp b/c if he is he completes a strong offensive line.Shawn Murphy has started to come around and looks like he can develop into a good player. Brandon Frye is versatile as he can play Guard and Tackle which locks him into the roster for me. Ndukwe is solid for depth and Andrew Garden was another steal in Round 6. Joe Berger is a Parcells’ guy so his job is safe for now. Berger will be the backup Center. Andy Allemen I see as the odd man out. Grade: 8.4
[Special Teams]
Who makes the team?*Dan Carpenter (27)*Brandon Field (28)*John Denny (29)
Carpenter was a pleasant surprise as an undrafted rookie and has proven to have a very strong leg. The one thing that worries me is that he hasn’t had to kick in too many pressure situations. From what I’ve seen and heard he has really been on point in OTA’sBrandon Fields can really boom the ball but needs to be more consistent. There were times when he would hit on off the side of his foot and it would be at the worst spot of a game.Denney snaps the ball and does that fairly well so there is not a whole lot to criticize here.Grade: 7.4
[Defensive Line]
Who makes the team? Phillip Merling (30)Kendall Langford (31)Paul Soliai (32)Jason Fergeson (33)Randy Starks (34)Tony McDaniel (35)Lionel Dotson (36)
The tandem of Merling and Langford come back for year two and to be honest I think both of these guy are legit 3-4 Defensive Ends. Langford is the type of player who is solid and won’t put up gaudy numbers but will get his job done. Merling on the other hand has big play potential. He showed this Week 17 when he turned the game around against the Jets by picking a Favre screen pass and taking it to the house. Lionel Dotson gets strong reviews from the Offensive linemen he practises against so I see him being the 4th end. Tony McDaniel is a guy who truly intrigues me. This guy is just a mammoth of a man. Randy Starks will continue to play inside and outside and was one of the bright spots of our team last season. He played extremely well. Jason Ferguson is getting older but he is still our best option in the middle for now. I expect us to make a push for Vince Wilford or look at Nose Tackle in the draft next year. Ferguson is in a contract year so he should play well and might see a small extension. Paul Solai needs to get his act together because he is very talented. I cannot hold faith in him despite him playing well in mini-camps because he was suspended for two games last year and was out of shape for OTA’s. I hope he can turn the corner. Louis Ellis is a guy I have us sending to the practice squad where I am afraid he will not clear waivers. I hope this kid somehow makes the team. Grade: 7.6
[Linebacker]
Who makes the team?Jason Taylor (37)Joey Porter (38)Cameron Wake (39)Akin Ayodele (40)Channing Crowder (41)Matt Roth (42)Reggie Torbor (43)Charlie Anderson (44)
This is an area of the team where I think we will show great improvement. I expect another big year from Joey porter. We finally have him playing the right position and he is among the league’s best pass-rushers. Matt Roth is one of my favorites and he is outstanding against the run. I hope we can ink him to an extension because this guy is a hustle type player with an attitude you need on a defense. Crowder and Ayodele are solid inside while not spectacular and neither makes too many big plays; Akin made some last season though. Cameron Wake is FAST. I saw him outrunning defensive backs at OTA’s. I think they are going to groom this kid into a special player. People put too much into what string he is playing with in mini-camp b/c I see this kid and he can play. He will learn from two of the best in Joey Porter and Jason Taylor. Charlie Anderson and Reggie Torbor provide solid depth. The return of #99 is a move that will pay dividends. He may not be a spring chicken but we know he has gas in the tank. I predict a 10 sack season for JT. Grade: 8.0
[Secondary]
Who makes the team?Vontae Davis (45)Sean Smith (46)Will Allen (47)Eric Green (48)Jason Allen (49)Chris Clemons (50)Tyrone Culver (51)Gibril Wilson (52)Yeremiah Bell (53)
I think we had a marvelous draft when it came to the secondary. Vontae Davis and Sean Smith were two of the top corners in this draft. Sean Smith is tall and fast and has great ball-hawking skills. Vontae Davis is a physical corner who is exactly what Parcells was looking for. Eric Green will provide solid depth but I do not see him starting long because he gets beat with the long ball too often. Will Allen is the definition of consistent and is quietly one of the teams’ best players. I think the 5th and final corner spot os between Nathan Jones and Jason Allen and surprisingly I think Jason Allen beats him out. Allen is versatile as he can play Corner and Safety and I think Allen’s special teams play is quite strong. Tyrone Culver is another hidden gem that the trifecta found. Chris Clemons was a very good pick in Round 6 and will be an eventual starter.Grade: 8.4
Grade: 8.8

Grade: 7.9

Predicting the Dolphins Record in 2009
It seems like the media is always against the Dolphins and this year is no different. Every magazine you read and every show you watch has already given the AFC East to the New England Patriots. The Dolphins have the hardest ranked schedule in the league according to the NFL but what does that mean? Does that automatically eliminate them from playoff contention? I recall the Pittsburgh Steelers having the hardest ranked schedule in the NFL last season and the last time I checked they were Super Bowl Champions. The “experts” who rank the schedule strength do so before the season, before the pre-season, so unless they have psychic abilities like Miss Cleo they are just guessing. On the schedule right now we play the Saints, Colts, and Patriots twice but if Tom Brady , Peyton Manning, and Drew Brees tear their ACL than the strength of difficulty for that game decreases majorly. It doesn’t even to best the teams’ best player but we cannot ignore the fact that injuries happen every season and they are not the only thing that effect schedule strength. For example we play the Steelers Week 17 at home but by then the Steelers could have won their division and resting their players for the playoffs. My point is that no one is Nostradamus and you can only play the games week by week. I can say that the Dolphins are a much improved team this year than they were as the 2008 AFC East Division Champions. How? Well let’s start with the coaching staff. I think that Bills Parcells, Jeff Ireland, and Tony Sparano have had a chance to weed out the players who do not fit their system and have had the opportunity to bring “their guys” on board. Chad Pennington has had a full off season to build continuity with his receivers like Ted Ginn Jr. and Davone Bess. Ronnie Brown is a full season removed from his ACL injury. The Dolphins made some improvements in areas they seriously lacked last season such as improving their secondary with the additions of Gibril Wilson, Eric Green, Vontae Davis, Chris Clemons, and Sean Smith; they bolstered their line by adding Jake Grove to be that physical center that can handle dominant Nose Tackle’s such as Vince Wilfork and Kris Jenkins. Justin Smiley, Donald Thomas, and Greg Camarillo all return from injury; in case you forgot let me remind you that all three are starters and Justin Smiley was playing at a very high level before his injury and our offense was never the same after he went down. Speaking of adding talent, Pat White might have been the most talented football player in the entire draft. Maybe he will not be an every down player just yet but the impact that this kid could make in the wild-cat and spread offenses is just scary. Not only does it add the passing element to the wild-cat offense but it also makes up more deficiencies that we have in our offense and will keep teams on their heels; Pat White is a very special player when the ball is in his hands. We drafted Patrick Turner in Round 3 who gives us that big, red-zone threat at receiver who is the perfect complement to our current receiving core. The reviews he has been getting through the OTA’s are very promising. The biggest difference is the return of Jason Taylor to Miami. Maybe he didn’t have a very productive season in Washington but he was playing out of position. Letting the Redskins rent JT for a year gave is the draft pick to acquire Pat White and let’s not forget that Jason Taylor is one of the best defensive players this decade and the best Miami Dolphins defender of all time. Our current coaching staff will know how insert him into the game and won’t waste the opportunity to have JT and Porter on the field as the same time like our previous disaster of a coaching staff. Now take for granted that my opinions could change with one injury but let's assume everyone stays helthy which rarely happens. I think the Dolphins are a playoff team again this season and might even be capable of winning a playoff game. Let’s take a look at the schedule and see how hard it really is…The reality of the NFL is that no game is easy and it is apparent when a team can turn around from a 1-15 team to winning their division the next season.
We open the season on the road traveling to Atlanta to play the Falcons who were equal to us in regards of having a major turn around last season. The Falcons have serious talent on the offensive side of the ball with Michael Turner, Roddy White, Tony Gonzalez and their young Quarterback Matt Ryan. They have a very solid offensive line but I think we match up very well against this team. I think Paul Pasqualoni, our defensive coordinator, will throw well developed blitz schemes at Matt Ryan which will force some bad throws. Will Allen will have a tough day with Roddy White but I think he can hold him in check. They will score on us but if we can take away Michael Turner on the ground and put the game in Matt Ryan’s hand than I feel very good about our chances. The Falcons defensive is god awful in my eyes. Their secondary is full of very young players in Chris Houston, Chevis Jackson, Christopher Owens, Williams Moore, and Thomas DeCoud whom I think are all very raw and really struggle with speedy receivers. Davone Bess should be able to work the middle of the field and Chris Houston will get eaten alive by Ted Ginn Jr. The Falcons linebacker core is god awful as well. If Jake Long can handle John Abraham this game should be a win for the Dolphins. Ronnie Brown should see big-time holes and our offensive line should be able to handle the Falcons below average defensive line. My
Prediction: I think the Dolphins put up some serious points in this game and I think the Dolphins win 37-24. (Record: 1-0)
On Week 2 the Miami Dolphins make their return to prime time as the play the Colts on Monday Night Football. The Colts are a team that has went through a lot of changes this off-season which included the retirement of head coach Tony Dungy and Offensive Coordinator Tom Moore. Both of these guys played essential roles to the success of the Indianapolis Colts. Marvin Harrison is no longer on the team and Joseph Addai was a major bust in 2008. Whenever Peyton Manning comes to town you are in for a rough night and even though we improved our secondary dramatically Peyton Manning will still get his. I don’t know about this one because we always play the Colts tough and I think this is a game we can win. I know the Colts are among the class of the NFL but we have some solid matchups. The Colts have a solid secondary but their front seven needs some work. Dwight Freeney vs. Jake Long is a matchup that scares me because Freeney is an amazing speed rusher and Long struggles a little with speed. Ronnie Brown should have some holes and I could see Anthony Fasano having a nice game. I think the Dolphins crowd will be fired up as it’s the home opener on Monday Night Football and the Dolphins faithful should come out in full strength. I think this one is a shoot out with the Dolphins pulling out an upset.
My prediction: Dolphins win 27-24 as Dan Carpenter hits a game winner. (Record: 2-0)
Then we hit the road as we travel to San Diego to play the Chargers in Week 3. The Chargers are due to beat us as we have beaten them the last two times we have played them. I see Phil Rivers making some plays and Tomlinson ripping some nice runs against us. I think the Chargers defense roughs up Pennington a little with Larry English, Shaun Phillips, and Shawn Merriman chasing after him.
My Prediction: The Chargers win 31-17. (Record: 2-1)
I will start by saying I think the Bills are a very bad football team. I understand they signed Terrell Owens but Trent Edwards took a major step back last season and to be honest we dominated them in our season sweep of the Bills. Marshawn Lynch will be rusty after serving his suspension but I think our defense takes their Offense down and I think we make some big plays against their young defense. The Bills secondary needs work as Ted Ginn Jr. burnt them for 7 catches and 175 receiving yards on the teams’ number one corner. Pennington will play a typical Chad game and complete 22 passes out of 29 attempts and throw a touchdown to Ginn and Fasano. Trent Edwards will be on his back a lot of I expect Joey Porter to get the hat trick with 3 sacks. The Bills have the worst Offensive Tackle Situation in the league and will have two rookies starting at guards.
My Prediction: Dolphins take this one fairly easily. The Bills will be 0-4 and Terrell Owens will start his crying ; Lee Evans will get upset that he is now the number two target and Trent Edwards will have T.O. in his ear demanding the ball. Dolphins win 27-10 (Record: 3-1)
We play another Monday Night game against the Jets in Week 5. Mark Sanchez will be starting by this time and I see the Jets as a team drafting in the top 10 next April. Why? I think Mark Sanchez was a product of being the Quarterback for the best college program in the nation surrounded by talent. He won’t have that talent in New York. They let their best Wide Receive go in La. Coles and didn’t replace him. Thomas Jones had a career year last season and he will NOT duplicate those numbers. Calvin Pace will be fresh off a 4 game suspension. I see the Dolphins sweeping the Jets this season as Pennington will torch his old team for the whole world to watch. I see Chad throwing 43 TD passes and I see him catching one from Pat White in some wild-cat trickery. I expect our secondary to shut down the Jets below average receiving core.
My Prediction: Dolphins dominate the Jets and take this one 31-17. (Record: 4-1)
The Dolphins have a bye in Week 6 and play the Saints out of the bye week and unfortunately I see this as a very tough game for the Dolphins. I could see this game turning out like the Arizona game in Week 2 last season. Drew Brees is among the top passers in the game and the Saints do indeed have some weapons. The Saints have a weak secondary and linebacker core however. I could see us scoring some points but as long as Drew Brees is healthy I am counting this one as loss.
My Prediction: Dolphins lose 10-31. (Record: 4-2)
Week 8 we travel to the scene where we won the division just one season ago and I see this game turning out the same way. I understand the Jets have spent some serious money the last couple of off-seasons but their level of talent is just not there in my opinion. Whether it is Mark Sanchez or Kellen Clemmons it really doesn’t matter because Clemmons is nothing more than a journeymen and I think Sanchez is severely overrated. Thomas Jones had a career year last season but I do not think he repeats. I think he takes a step back. Their receiver core is god awful. Their offensive line is solid. Defensively I know they have Rex Ryan calling the shots but the truth is the Ravens defense was good before Ryan was the Defensive coordinator and it will be good after he leaves. The talent for this Jets defense is nowhere near the talent he had to work with in Baltimore. Simply put the Miami Dolphins are a much better football team than the Jets but the Jets play this one tough at home.
My Prediction: Dolphins win 20-17. The score makes it look closer than the game really is. (Record: 5-2)
Week 9 has disaster written all over it. We play the Patriots at Gillette Stadium where we embarrassed them last season and I think the Patriots will have revenge on their mind. I look for them to use the Brady to Moss combination in an attempt to abuse our young secondary. I think the Dolphins will give the Patriots a much better fight than they think. It will be interesting to see how Tom Brady returns from injury and if we can go to Foxboro and win than we are really turning into something special. I don’t think we are there just yet.
My Prediction: Patriots win 38-28. I think our team will put a valiant effort but at the end of the day the Patriots are at home and use this to their advantage. (Record: 5-3)
Week 10 against the Buccaneers at home could be the easiest game on our schedule. The Buccs are going through a major makeover and have rid of some of their mainstays. Their interior defense is just weak and I am shocked their ignored Defensive Tackle in the draft. I think Josh Freeman will be their starting Quarterback by this game and I think he is a major dud. I saw some “experts” compared his game to Flacco but I truly believe he should have gone back to Kansas State for his senior season. He has a live arm but is too raw to make an impact just yet. Derrick Ward was a major off-season signing for them but let’s see how he does outside of New York. This is a game where Ted Ginn Jr. can make a serious impact. I think the Dolphins are more physical, more talented, and better coached and it will show in a big way.
My Prediction: Dolphins win 23-6. Raheem Morris has his work cut out for him in Tampa. (Record: 6-3)
Thursday Night Prime Time game on NFL network against the Carolina Panthers in Week 11 is the Dolphins third Prime-Time game of the season. In the past we have had good luck against the Panthers. I remember Ronnie Brown’s rookie season when he busted a 40 plus yarder to seal the deal. That game was the game when I knew Sam Madison was done in Miami as Steve Smith made him look like Jamar Fletcher. The Panthers have the best offensive line in the league for my money and I think DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart will have some nice holes to frolic through. Jake Delhomme doesn’t scare me at all but Steve Smith sure does; so does Julius Peppers. Vernon Carey will have his hands full with Julius.
My Prediction: Panthers win this won 27-16. (Record: 6-4)
Week 12 has us traveling to Buffalo to play the Buffalo Bills and by this point Terrell Owens has turned this locker room upside down. I think there is some offensive talent on this roster with Lee Evans, Marshawn Lynch, and Terrell Owens but letting Jason Peters go is going to be a major mistake for this team. Their Left Tackle is in for a long season which in turn indicates that Trent Edwards might spend more time on his back than Jenna Jameson. Their defense doesn’t scare me either. Ted Ginn Jr. touched their secondary last season. Their linebacker core is average and Aaron Maybin has bust written all over him.We proved we can score on them and we proved their Offensive Line couldn’t block Joey Porter who accounted for 4 sacks in two games versus the bills last season. With the an improved pass rush in Miami and a weaker offensive line in Buffalo I think Miami fans should get the brooks ready.
My Prediction: 24-21…. Dolphins WIN! (Record: 7-4)
Last year the Dolphins destroyed the Patriots in Foxboro but the Patriots came back for revenge beating the Dolphins in Miami. This game was close for three and a half quarters but in true Bill Belichick style the Patriots ran up the score in the 4th quarter. Well the I have Patriots got avenging their home defeat from a season ago and beating the Dolphins in Week 9 and in turn I have the Dolphins avenging their home defeat against the Patriots and winning here in Week 13. I think the crowd is going to be fired up for this one and I think this is going to be one of those games that Chad Pennington shows how special of a player he truly is. I think the Patriots young secondary will struggle with our young receiver core but by this point Teddy Ginn, Greg Camarillo, Davone Bess, and Patrick Turner should gel into a dangerous group. I guess I am not ready to give the Lombardi trophy to the Patriots just because Tom Brady is back. I think that their defense is mediocre and their offensive line is solid but not spectacular. The way to beat the Patriots is pressuring Tom Brady which the Giants did just two seasons ago.
My Prediction: Dolphins win 31-28. (Record: 8-4)
The next stop on our schedule is Jacksonville to play the Jaguars. I do not think this game will be an absolute cake-walk but I can say that I feel David Garrard is a bad Quarterback. Maurice Jones-Drew does scare me a bit but their Receivers certainly don’t. Their defense isn’t the powerhouse it once was as John Henderson’s play has declined severely since the departure of Marcus Stroud. I think we will have success running the ball and throwing against the Jaguars. I think this is an absolute ugly game which we grew a custom to last season.
My Prediction: Dolphins win 13-10. (Record: 9-4)
We take a trip to Tennessee in Week 15 to play the Titans which should be a very interesting game. I do not know why but for some reason Kerry Collins doesn’t scare me. We always play well against Collins and I see him as a statue for our defense to get after. Their Wide Receivers are mediocre at best so I am not worried about their air attack what so ever but Chris Johnson does scare me. I saw him gash a very good Ravens defense in the playoffs last season and had he not gotten injured in that game than I think we would have saw the Steelers host the Titans in the AFC Championship. There defense is still very good but you cannot make up for a loss of Albert Haynesworth. Haynesworth was without question the best player on their team and they did not draft or sign anyone who can come near replacing Fat Albert. I think this game is severely ugly but think our boys match up well with this team. Courtland Finnegan is a shut down corner but Nick Harper certainly is not.
My Prediction: Dolphins Win 16-10 (Record: 10-4)
The Texans game is the game I want more than any game on the schedule. We always seem to be beating them for three and a half Quarters but lose to them in the end. Last years game left a very sour taste in my mouth and it’s hard to imagine that winning that game would have put as at 12-4 on the season. Andre Johnson is an absolute freak and I wish he was a Dolphin. We have no one who can cover him and if we did he would still catch the ball BUT I think we get our revenge. Their offensive line is a work in progress and Matt Schaub does NOT impress me. Steve Slaton had a great rookie season but I don’t like him now that the NFL can study him. Their defense is impressive as Mario Williams is among the best in the league. Their secondary is like paper and we will throw all over them. Dolphins win this game clinching a playoff spot.
My Prediction: Dolphins Win (24-20)
We are not better than the Steelers and if the Steelers have something to play for they are a better team. Big Ben continues to impress me and I think he is among the elite level of players in the league. Their defense is the best in the league and Chad Penning would struggle with Woodley and Harrison breathing down his neck. I hope we do not see them in the playoffs.
My Prediction: Steelers Win 24-10. (Record: 11-5)
Is 11-5 good enough to get us another division title? What do you think? I know some will say I am a homer but we did it last year with a far less talented team. We may lack that superstar on our team but players like Chad Pennington, Ronnie Brown, Jason Taylor, Joey Porter, and Jake Long are among their best at their positions.. this team is loaded with young talent in players like Pat White, Chad Henne, Ted Ginn, Davone Bess, Greg Camarillo, Patrick Turner, Anthony Fasano, Donald Thomas, Vernon Carey, Phillip Merling, Kendall Langford, Vontae Davis, and Sean Smith. I will never doubt this team again after the joy they brought me last season. This team has heart and coaching which is something we haven't seen in over a decade. This is not your same old Miami Dolphin team that lacks the hunger and desire that it takes to be great. under Tony Sparano GREAT things will happen.

ALL NFL Team
*Today I want to look at my "All-NFL" team . Please feel free to leave Feedback...
Quarterback: Drew Brees-New Orleans Saints
Analysis: Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are among the elite Quarterbacks of all time but a lot of question marks surround them going into this season. Tom Brady returns off of a severe ACL injury and I think Brady might be a little rusty. Peyton Manning doesn't have Marvin Harrison anymore and despite the fact that Reggie Wayne is the better player now no Quarterback.Receiver combination had more chemistry and success than Manning and Harrison. Also, Colts long time Offensive Coordinator Tom Moore is no longer calling the plays and for the first time in his career Peyton will have to develop a new relationship with an Offensive Cooordinator. Brees had a magical season in 2008 as he almost broke Dan Marino's 5084 Passing Yards in a single season. Brees does not have the plethora of talent surrounding him that Manning and Brady do. Brees is the leader of a revived New Orleans Saints franchise and this year I see him as a serious contender for league MVP.
Running Back: Adrian Peterson-Minnesota Vikings
Analysis: There is no one better in the game than AP right now. Petersons' blend of strength, power, and quickness really took the NFL by storm from the first time he walked into a professional football field. His rookie season was simply marvelous and last season was not too shabby. He has the benefit of running behind a great Offensive Line but you cannot take away from his running ability.
Fullback: Le'Ron McClain-Baltimore Ravens
Analysis: He played a more traditional half-back role in 2008 but proved to have a nose for the end-zone scoring 10 touchdowns. McClain is a very good blocker and runs extremely tough between the tackles. The one knock on McClain is that he lacks the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield.
Tight End: Jason Witten-Dallas Cowboys
Analysis: I seriously considered Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates here but Jason Witten takes the nod here. Witten is as tough as nails and he is never reluctant to go over the middle. He is Tony Romo's safety net on the field and when you need a first down on 3rd and 8 you look Witten's way. Witten is also an above average blocker in the running game.
Wide Receiver #1: Larry Fitzgerald-Arizona Cardinals
Analysis: In my entire life I have never seen anyone with the ability to jump and catch the ball at the highest point like Larry Fitz. The guy has hands of glue and can out-leap any Defensive-Back. The run he made in the playoff elevated him to not only the best receiver in the game but one of the league's top players as well.
Wide Receiver #2: Randy Moss-New England Patiots
Analysis: I actually typed Andre Johnsons' name here but deleted it for Moss as Randy is simply the best receiver I have seen in my lifetime not named Jerry Rice. Just two seasons ago he cuaght 23 touchdowns in a single season..Wow! He didn't have as good of a statistical season last year but Tom Brady was hurt and his numbers were not that bad by any means.
Offensive Tackle #1: Joe Thomas-Cleveland Browns
Analysis: There aren't many bright spots in Cleveland right now but selecting Joe Thomas in the 2007 draft was a very good move. Joe Thomas has great footwork and excels in pass blocking; his run blocking is above average as well.
Offensive Tackle #2: Jake Long-Miami Dolphins
Analysis: Like Joe Thomas it only took Jake Long his rookie season to get the Pro-Bowl nod. The Miami Dolphins had a void at Left Tackle since Richmond Webb left town and Long did an excelleant job at fulfilling that tole. Jake is an absolute mauler in the running game and is developing the tools to be a great pass blocker as well. This kid has so much upside and will see many trips to Hawaii throughout his playing carrer.
Offensive Guard #1: Steve Hutchinson-Minnesota Vikings
Analysis: He has been the best guard in the league for seven seasons strong by now and despite getting older Hutch's game is as solid as ever.
Offensive Guard #2: Chris Snee-New York Giants
Analysis: Just ask Brandon Jacobs why it is so easy to run on the right side and he will tell you because of Snee. Snee is an complete guard who has a great footwork and absolutly looks for contact
Center: Nick Mangold-New York Jets
Analysis: This guy has developed into a very good center and still has a lot of upside. Mangold is tough and rugged in the middle and gets great movement on defensive tackle's off the snap.
Defensive End #1: Jared Allen-Minneosta Vikings
Analysis: Productive. That is the one word that I can use to describe Allen. The guy simply is a sack machine who plays with a very high motor.
Defensive End #2: Julius Peppers-Carolina Panthers
Analysis: Peppers could very well be the best defensive player in the game. He is in another contract year so I see huge numbers coming out of him. He is just more athletic, quicker, and stronger than the guys trying to block him.
Defensive Tackle #1: Albert Haynesworth-Washington Redskins
Analysis: Fat Albert was the reason that the Tennessee Titans had such a strong defense last season and I think he will be truely missed in Tennessee. Haynesworth just eats blockers and gets great penetration on every snap.
Defensive Tackle #: Kevin Williams-Minnesota Vikings
Analysis: This the 4th Viking on my list and Kevin Williams is an absolute beast. Very strong at the point of attack and sheds blockers well.
Middle Linebacker: Patrick Willis-San Francisco 49ers
Analysis: The 2007 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year is in a class of his own when it comes to Middle Linebackers. He is a pure tackling machine who can really lay some lumber when needed.
Outside Linebacker #1: Demarcus Ware-Dallas Cowboys
Analysis: 20 Sachs in 2008 and better years ahead of him. He is the best pas-rusher in the gam today and is actually very good in pass coverage as well.
Outside Linebacker #2: James Harrison-Pittsburgh Steelers
Analysis: Defensive MVP of the League and Superbowl MVP last season. Wow has this guy blossomed into an elite player.
Cornerback #1: Nnamdi Asomugha-Oakland Raiders
Analysis: Shame this gane is in Oakland because he is the best Corner in the game as he literally shuts down one half of the field. His coverage ability is spectacular and he is a solid tackler as well.
Cornerback #2: Asante Samuel-Philadelphia Eagles
Analysis: Simply a play-maker will bgood ball skills and the ability to take it to the house. Not a strong tackler but everyone has a hole in their game.
Strong Safety: Troy Polamalu-Pittsburgh Steelers
Analsys: Complete player. Tackling machine. He has very good ball skill and when the balls in his hands he is dangerous is well. He plays sideline to sideline as well as anyone in the league.
Free-Safety: Ed Reed-Baltimore Ravens
Analysis: The best ball-hawk the game has every seen and the most dangerous player with the ball in his hands in the game today. He is simply a game changer on the defensive side of the ball

2010 NFL Power Rankings
1. Pittsburgh Steelers
The Good: Their defense is back and could be even better with the draft selection of Evander Hood and Lawrence Timmons starting in the middle. Big Ben is just a winner and until they lose they are the best.
The Bad: Their offensive line struggled mightily last season and I do not think they did much to improve it. I like the Kraig Ubrik draft selection but their Offensive Tackles need some work
2. New York Giants
The Good: Osi Umenyora returns from injury and combining him with Justin Tuck gives them a fearsome defensive end combination. The draft selections of Hakeem Nicks, Ramses Barden, and Travis Beckum adds viable targets for Eli.
The Bad: I think their secondary is a little young. Aaron Ross has yet to prove first round worthy and the same goes for Kenny Phillips.
3. Philadelphia Eagles
The Good: Donovan McNabb finally has weapons with DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. LeSean McCoy was a brilliant draft pick in Round 2.
The Bad: Wow they are seriously hurting at the Safety position. Sean Jones? didn't he just get chased out of Cleveland.
4. San Diego Chargers
The Good: A pass rush that consist of Shawn Merriman, Shaun Phillips, and Larry English is scary for any Quarterback. Phillip Rivers is coming into his own as an Elite Quarterback in this league.
The Bad: LaDaniam Tomlinson has a lot of mileage on those wheels and seems to have started a full decline. They need some help at Wide Receiver because the Craig "Buster" Davis pick is certainly not working out well.
5. New England Patriots:
The Good: Tom Brady returns from injury and still has Randy Moss and Wes Welker to chuck the rock to. I like the addition of Joey Galloway as well.
The Bad: They traded Vrabel and do not have anyone who can really get after the Quarterback.
6. Carolina Panthers
The Good: Their Running Game is very strong; they might have the best offensive line in the game and I do not know of a better one-two punch than DeAngelo Williams and Jon Stewart.
The Bad: Jake Delhomme seems rusty for me..
7. Indianapolis Colts:
The Good: They still have Peyton Manning and there is no one better in the business.
The Bad: No Marvin Harrison, No Tom Moore, No Tony Dungy.
8. Minnesota Vikings
The Good: Adrian Peterson is hands down the best Running Back in the game and now they have an x-factor in Percy Harvin. Their defensive line is simply amazing with Jared Allen and Kevin Williams.
The Bad: This whole Brett Favre Situation part 2 is annoying. just retire or play. I'd stick with Sage.
9. Arizona Cardinals
The Good: Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin are still together. Beanie Wells is a major upgrade at Running Back as well.
The Bad: They still need some work at Left tackle as Mike Gandy was abused in the Super Bowl.
10. Miami Dolphins
The Good: The return of Jason Taylor should provide some veteran leadership and improved pass-rush. Pat White really will scare some defenses as he will excel in the "Wild-Cat" offense. The Dolphins drafted a pair of good corners in Vontae Davis and Sean Smith.
The Bad: Is Ted Ginn Jr. a #1 receiver? Need some depth at Defensive Tackle.
11. Baltimore Ravens
The Good: A defense that consist of Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Haloti Ngata, and Terrell Suggs is still very good.
The Bad: The Ravens needed a receiver before Derrick Mason retired and if he stays retired they are not playing in January next season
12. Tennessee Titans
The Good: Chris Johnson seems poised to be a very special player.
The Bad: Can this defense still be as dominant with Fat Albert absent from the middle?
13. New Orleans Saints
The Good: I see an MVP type year for Drew Brees and a coming out party for Pierre Thomas.
The Bad: Despite drafting Malcolm Jenkins their secondary still is not very good.
14. Green Bay Packers
The Good: Aaron Rodgers doesn't have a full off-season to hear how he is filling Lord Favre's shoes.
The Bad: A transition to a 3-4 defense takes away the effectiveness of their best defensive player in Aaron Kampman.
15. Houston Texans
The Good: Andre Johnson and Steve Slaton give this offense some real fire power. Mario Williams was a genius #1 overall pick. Reggie Who?
The Bad: Their secondary and offensive line are relatively weak units.
16. Dallas Cowboys
The Good: They have a very talented roster and the best Defensive player in the league in Demarcus Ware.
The Bad: Cowboys fans and players alike will realize despite the mouth T.O was a baller and that trading everything away for Roy Williams will haunt this team.
17. Seattle Seahawks
The Good: Hassleback will bounce back from the injury bug. Their defense is solid and TJ Houshmandzadeh is a viable receiver.
The Bad: Julius Jones and TJ Duckett
18. Cincinnati Bengals
The Good: Carson Palmer returns from injury. They had a very solid draft that included chase Coffman, Andre Smith, Michael Johnson, and an absolute steal in Round 2 in Rey Maualuga.
The Bad: NO TJ and Cedric Benson.
19. Atlanta Falcons
The Good: they replaced the face of their franchise and starting Quarterback with Matt Ryan and proved to make a great free-agent acquisition in Michael Turner.
The Bad: their linebackers and secondary is just terrible.
20. Chicago Bears
The Good: Busy off-season acquiring Orlando Pace and Jay Cutler and apparently struck gold in Matt Forte
The Bad: Depth at Corner and lack of a quality Wide Receiver.
The Bad: They still have no receivers
21. Washington Redskins
The Good: Albert Haynesworth, Jeremy Jarmon, and Brian Orakpo should really bolster their defense.
The Bad: They obviously have no faith in Jason Campbell and they need some help at Offensive Tackle.
22. Kansas City Chiefs
The Good: Busy off-season that landed them Tyson Jackson, Zach Thomas, Bobby Engram, Mike Vrabel, and Matt Cassell.
The Bad: Larry Johnson is unhappy, Brian Waters is unhappy, Tony Gonzalez is gone, and they drafted Tyson Jackson at #3.
23. New York Jets
The Good: The Rex Ryan hiring should help this talented defense
The Bad: They have no receivers and Mark Sanchez has bust written all over him
24. Jacksonville Jaguars
The Good: They finally got some receivers on board and they are loaded at Offensive Tackle
The Bad: What week will Jags fans start calling for Garrard's head?
25. Buffalo Bills
The Good: A receiver combination of Lee Evans and T.O. is potent.
the Bad: Marshawn Lynch is suspended 3 games, Trent Edwaards doesn't have me sold, and they have no Left Tackle.
26. Denver Broncos
The Good: Knowshon Moreno.
The Bad: No Jay Cutler for Kyle Orton?
27. Cleveland Browns
The Good: Mangini didn't lose Big Daddy Shaun Rogers.
The Bad: So Much bad here. Terrible secondary, Jamal Lewis, Brady Quinn failing to take the Quarterback job from Derek Anderson, and no Kellen Winslow.
28. Tampa Bay Buccaneers:
The Good: Raheem Morris will be a good coach if the front office is patient.
The Bad: A roster makeover is ongoing.
29. San Francisco 49ers
The Good: Michael Crabtree at #10.. WOW!
The Bad: Alex Smith.. Nope... Shaun Hill... Nope.. then who?
30. Detroit Lions
The Good: I really like Calvin Johnson and Brandon Pettigrew as weapons for Matthew Stafford
The Bad: their entire defense not named Ernie Simms
31. Oakland Raiders
The Good: Hmmm..
The Bad: Reaching at the draft again. Jamarcus Russell, Darren McFadden, Darrius Heyward Bey, and Michael Mitchell currently lead their positions for all bust team.
32. St Louis Rams:
The Good: Steve Jackson
the Bad: Everything else.
The Good: Their defense is back and could be even better with the draft selection of Evander Hood and Lawrence Timmons starting in the middle. Big Ben is just a winner and until they lose they are the best.
